July is Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month
Spreading Awareness About Juvenile Arthritis
July is Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month, a month dedicated to increasing awareness of the early signs and symptoms of juvenile arthritis. The campaign was initiated by the Arthritis Foundation and targets a condition that currently affects 300,000 children nationwide, making it one of the most common childhood diseases in the US.
Inflammation and Pain
Arthritis is caused by inflammation of the joints, but juvenile arthritis can also include the eyes, skin, and gastrointestinal tract as affected areas. It causes pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of motion. ”Juvenile Arthritis” is the term used to describe arthritis in children. There is no cure, but with early diagnosis and aggressive treatment, remission (little or no disease activity or symptoms) is possible.
Physical Therapy Can Help Kids with Arthritis
Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA), also called Stills disease, is the most common form of arthritis seen in children and young adults. Children commonly complain of joint pain and stiffness, along with an occasional fever. JRA can impact fine movements and overall mobility if left untreated. A physical therapist can help the child to improve muscle tone, and strength and reduce joint inflammation. This helps children regain the quality of life they deserve; allowing them to live with less pain and enjoy the benefits of unrestricted movement.
